SRINAGAR: The people of north Kashmir have hailed the efforts of Block Medical Officer (BMO) Langate Dr Nazir Ahmad for organising a mega cataract surgery camp which is going on at sub district hospital (SDH) Langate since May 3, a statement issued here by BMO Langate on Friday, said.
The camp was organised by BMO Langate in collaboration with Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) and CMO Kupwara under “control of blindness” programme. The camp was inaugurated by MLA Langate Er Rasheed.
BMO Langate Dr Nazir while thanking the Director health services Dr Saleem ur Rahman for his support said it is the first of its kind facility provided to the people of this far flung area.
People also thanked the DHSK in general and BMO Langate in particular for the facility in a far flung area.
“Such health facility has been provided to us for the first time,” the people, according to the statement said.
People hailing from not only Langate but from adjoining north Kashmir areas like Sopore, Rafiabad, Kupwara, and Baramulla were examined by experienced ophthalmologists and were advised treatment, the statement said, adding many of them underwent cataract surgeries free of charges.
“We are satisfied by the services that have been made available in the camp,” the statement quoted an attendant Farooq Ahmad, whose elderly father underwent cataract surgery in the camp, as saying.
“This is a step to improve the quality of life of the old and infirm senior citizens, who, after the surgery and lenses implant, will be able to lead an independent life,” Dr Nazir said in a statement. “110 senior citizens from underprivileged remote areas underwent the free cataract surgery with use of latest state of art equipment for implantation of intraocular lenses till now.”
Dr Nazir added that many people outside the jurisdiction of Langate availed the facility and were satisfied after the surgery and allied treatment. He said that the camp will continue for some more time and that they want more and more patients to come and avail the opportunity.
