Srinagar: Two officers of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) including a law enforcement officer have been suspended for allegedly allowing illegal construction at different places in Srinagar.
Sources informed Kashmir Reader that a law enforcement officer and the Section Officer of West Zone (Ward 18-26), under which comes the commercial hub of Batamaloo and Karan Nagar, have been suspended. SMC Commissioner Riyaz Wani told Kashmir Reader that the two officers were involved in allowing illegal constructions and the section officer had also intervened to stop the demolition drive of the SMC at Basant Bagh.
The SMC in its reply on 07-01-2018 to a Right-To-Information (RTI) query had said that no permission had been issued to Muhammad Altaf Mir and others, residents of Basant Bagh, to make new constructions to a house in the area. “The defendant has started the construction of his house afresh… and has violated all the statutes, norms, procedures, laws and by-laws of Municipal Corporation which every person whomsoever had to follow strictly,” the SMC’s reply read.
The SMC Commissioner said of the demolition drive at Basant Bagh, “The construction was illegally raised, following which the corporation tried to demolish the building during which the section officer, who has been suspended, intervened and tried to halt the demolition process.”
He said that the illegal construction is still there and awaits demolition since then.
The SMC recently launched an anti-encroachment drive at Hari Singh High Street, one of the busiest markets in Srinagar city. The drive was supervised by Inspector General of Police (Traffic) Basant Rath, who accompanied an anti-encroachment team consisting of the SMC, district administration, and traffic police.
