SHOPIAN: A complete shutdown was observed in Shopian district for the third straight day on Sunday to mourn the killing of a local youth who was killed in a suspected militant attack in Lazibal area of Anantnag on Thursday.
The slain youth, Shafaaq, was a college student who helped his father in selling clothes on a roadside cart. He had gone to Anantnag to buy clothes to sell and was boarding a passenger cab when a bullet fired by suspected militants on government forces hit him in the chest.
The situation in the district remained calm but minor clashes between local youths and government forces were reported in Meminder and Kannipora areas.
Since the beginning of this year, Shopian has remained shut for a total of 40 days in protest against killings of civilians and militants. Mobile internet services have remained snapped for 35 days in this period.
