Slain Shopian student was family’s backbone

Shopian: The college student from Shopian who was killed in Anantnag, when an army party was attacked by militants on Thursday, had gone to buy merchandise that his father would sell on a roadside cart in Shopian.
Family sources said that Shafaaq Shah was the backbone of his family, who along with his studies would help his father run the roadside cart.
“His father Shabir is a simple man and his younger brother too is not physically strong which brought all the responsibilities of family affairs on Shafaaq,” a relative of Shafaaq said.
Shafaaq’s father Shabir Ahmad Shah said Shafaaq had gone to Anantnag to buy textiles for selling on the roadside cart.
Shafaaq is survived by his parents, a younger brother and a sister.
His friends recall him a sober and down to earth person who hardly had any spare time to spend with friends or for playing, as he spend most of his time in the family affairs.
Shafaaq was studying in second year of his undergraduate course at government degree college Shopian.
Thousands of people attended the funeral prayers of Shafaaq outside Shopian’s Jamia mosque on Thursday.
Eyewitnesses said that almost 5000 people attended the funeral prayers amid pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
Shafaaq was killed after a bullet hit on chest, when militants attacked an a army party in Lazibal area of Anantnag. He was travelling a passenger cab at the time of incident.
