SRINAGAR: Congress on Saturday said more than 100 percent hike in excise duty on petrol and over 300 percent hike in duty on diesel by BJP government at New Delhi during its four years tenure as compared to rates during UPA regime has exposed the Modi-government’s approach towards the common man who is unable to bear the resultant unprecedented price hike of all commodities.
Chief spokesperson JKPCC Ravinder Sharma in a statement issued here lashed out at the Government of India for the unprecedented charge in the shape of excise duty and tax collection on petrol and diesel, which has “overburdened” the common man.
The UPA government managed the prices of petrol and diesel during peak of escalated international prices of crude oil but the Modi government did not pass on the benefit of record fall of prices of petrol/diesel in the international market which shows “anti-people” and “anti-poor” attitude of BJP government.
He said Modi government should have considered lowering the rates of taxes on petrol/diesel to give respite to the people.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to bring the prices of all commodities under control and change the destiny of poor and common man but after more than four years now, the common people have right to question what changed for him,” Raina said.
