Kupwara: The army is conducting a search operation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector in north Kashmir’s Kupwara for militants who infiltrated from the Pakistani side and were spotted late Thursday night, after which a gunfight ensued for about an hour.
Sources said that the army’s 16 Madras regiment posted along the LoC at Girat Post, Kanthwali Jammugund, in Keran sector detected suspicious movement late Thursday night. A gunfight began in the night between the army and the militants which lasted for about an hour. On Friday morning, army said that a search operation has been launched in the area and reinforcements have been brought to eliminate the group of militants who had crossed the LoC and were on way down into Kashmir valley.
Senior Superintendent of Police SSP Kupwara, AS Dinkar, told Kashmir Reader on Friday evening that the search operation was still going on.
“It was actually an infiltration bid that was foiled by army. The search operation is still on but we have no information about the casualties from the militants’ side,” Dinkar said.
