Anantnag: A 26-year-old man was killed on Thursday afternoon after a bullet pierced his chest when militants opened fire at a Road Opening Party (ROP) of paramilitary CRPF and “missed the target,” police said.
The slain civilian has been identified as Shakeeb Shabir, son of Shabir Ahmad Shah, resident of Kharpora area in Shopian district.
“He was travelling in a Tata Sumo when a bullet fired by militants hit him,” SSP Anantnag Altaf Khan said.
Khan said that the incident took place in Laizbal area of main town Anantnag at about 2:20 PM Thursday afternoon.
“Militants travelling in a car, bearing number JK03 B-1*4*, fired at security forces in Laizbal area. They missed the target and a bullet hit a civilian travelling in a Tata Sumo,” Khan said, adding that a hunt has been launched to trace the militants travelling in the car.
As the militants managed to escape, the injured civilian was rushed to Anantnag district hospital for treatment.
“Following preliminary medical attention, he was referred to Srinagar foe further treatment,” a medico at the district hospital said.
Shakeeb succumbed to his injuries near Bijbehara, on the way to Srinagar.
“Post-mortem and other medico-legal formalities were completed in Bijbehara before the body was handed over to the family,” Khan said.
