Srinagar: Following the killing of a senior political activist both People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress condemned the killing but at the same time “disowned” the activist as well.
Ghulam Nabi Patel was killed in an apparent militants attack in Rajpora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district while two of his guards were injured grievously.
Moments later Chief Minister and PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti, took to Twitter to condemn the killing. She, in the process, described Patel as a Congress leader.
“Heartfelt condolences to the family of senior Congress leader, G. N. Patel who was killed by militants today in Rajpora. Such cowardly acts achieve nothing but leave one more family devastated,” Mehbooba posted.
Around the same time a Congress press statement was released which described the slain as a PDP activist.
“Strongly condemning the gruesome killing of Senior PDP Activist Ghulam Nabi Patel, the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Spokesperson expressed profound grief and sorrow over the killing and described it as highly shameful and dastardly act.” the Congress statement read.
