SRINAGAR: The busy Karan Nagar Market observe3d a shutdown in protest on Monday after IG Traffic Basant Rath along with Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) undertook an encroachment drive in the area.
According to shopkeepers, the IG Traffic came with SMC team at 11.30 am on Monday morning for an encroachment drive during which they pulled out shutter of a shop, and damaged shutters of another two, citing encroachment.
President traders Federation Karan Nagar, Ajaz Shahdhar said that the traders condemn the “sudden & unprecedented encroachment drive by IG Traffic in coordination with SMC at Karan Nagar”.
Shahdar said any such drive should have been preceded by a notice to concerned shopkeepers.
“We always stand by law and any action taken by the authorities should have followed after serving the notice to the concerned shopkeepers but things are becoming more filmy now a days in Kashmir as the real & practical things never work for the authorities who only permit every construction first & then become the part of encroachment team to save their skin,” said Shahdhar. Commissioner SMC Reyaz Ahmad Wani said that the standard operating procedure was followed in the drive.
“Whatever is illegal has to come down, that is the mandate of SMC and traffic department. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been followed. The officials, from traffic, district administration, all required officials were on spot,” Wani said.
“The drives are for public welfare, will continue, until we make the place more livable.”
