BANDIPORA: The 85-kilometre Bandipora-Gurez road will be opened on Tuesday, April 24, for the first time in recent history.
According to the information provided by the assistant road transport officer and officials with the Border Road Organisation (BRO) stationed here at Sonarwani, Bandipora, “the road will be thrown open for the traffic on 24th of April at 11 am after an inauguratory function”.
This is the first time the road will open at least more than a month earlier for traffic due to the department’s vigorous efforts in clearing snow from Razdan top. “The comparatively low snowfall is also the reason the road will open soon as we had directed BRO to clear snow in it very early,” the administrative official said.
Prior to this, the road was open for most of the winter, including in the month of January, due to near-zero snowfall in the harshest winter season.
It created an unusual winter bustle in the remote Gurez valley, which otherwise would spend the winter indoors.
“Though the road is through for traffic from March with the official warning, it will now be opened on Tuesday for traffic as per our schedule,” an official said.
On Saturday, however, the road was closed after Gurez received fresh snowfall.
