Srinagar: Incessant rains made Srinagar seem like a flooded city on Friday, with streets and lanes in several civil lines areas as well as in old-city areas inundated, hindering the movement of pedestrians as well as vehicles.
Waterlogged areas included Residency Road, Maulana Azad Road, Jawahar Nagar, Mehjoor Nagar, Chanapora, Qamarwari, Bemina, Indira Nagar, Hyderpora, Hari Singh High Street, Chanapora, Rambagh, Natipora, Shivpora, Sonawar, Rainawari, Bohri Kadal, Eidgah, Nowpora, Sekidafar, and many others.
In areas like Bemina, Jawahar Nagar and Indira Nagar, people were unable to move out of their houses due to the inundated streets and by-lanes.
Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Bemina, said his area turns into a cesspool even when there is slight rainfall.
An official of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation said that work has been started on draining out the accumulated water. “The dewatering pumps are on the job. There are several places in the city that suffer water logging because of old drainage system,” he said.
He said that all the low-lying areas are being dewatered manually or by employing dewatering pumps.
He said that the corporation has pressed in men and machinery who are proactively clearing the roads and interior areas.
