Jammu: The family of the eight-year-old girl who was raped and murdered in Kathua has decided to request the Supreme Court to transfer the trial to another state.
The murder of the child, who belonged to a nomadic Muslim community, outraged Kashmir after details were exposed in a police chargesheet last week.
The family said that they are apprehensive that the trial will not happen peacefully, seeing the condition in Jammu.
“Seeing that lawyers opposed it in Kathua and did not let the chargesheet proceed,” the lawyer of the family said: “We request the Supreme Court to transfer this case to some other state.”
The issue has taken a political turn and two BJP ministers from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s cabinet, who defended the accused, resigned.
The 8-year-old child was kidnapped while she was grazing horses on January 10. For a week, she was sedated, starved and gang-raped by a group that included police officers. Then she was murdered – her head was bashed with a stone to ensure that she was dead.
