Jammu: Barring a few pockets, a call for shutdown by Jammu Bar Association in support of the accused in Kathua rape and murder was largely defied in Jammu.
The Jammu Bar had given call after crime branch submitted its report in a court stating that eight-year-old Bakerwal girl was injected sedatives, confined in Devisthan temple, then raped and murdered by the accused.
Jammu Chamber had not extended its support to the call.
Witnesses said that while Jammu city, Sambha and Kathua towns remained closed, other districts had no impact of the call. Even in the affected areas, the shutdown was limited to few business establishments, schools and public transport.
The bar took out a march through various areas of the city upto Janipora. Witnesses said they were raising anti-Rohingya slogans among others, and forcibly shut shops that were open in the city.
Government had deployed forces in large numbers across the city, which did not stop the lawyers’ march. Against the Bar’s call and its atrocious stand on the minor’s murder and rape, National Conference took out a protest from its headquarters towards secretariat. Eye witnesses said that after walking half a kilometre, police blocked their way.
After receiving a lukewarm response to their call, Jammu Bar has called for a meeting on Thursday to discuss the future strategy for helping the accused.
Meanwhile Chief Justice of High Court has directed police’s security wing to provide security to a woman lawyer, who is pursuing the rape and murder case in the court.
Advocate Deepika Singh Rajawat had been told a Bar member that she cannot appear in the court as the members were on strike.
