Three civilians killed by forces at Khudwani in south Kashmir

Srinagar: Three civilians and an Army soldier were killed, around 30 civilians and two forces personnel were injured on Wednesday during an encounter with militants and clashes in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, sources said.
Government forces launched a cordon and search operation in the district’s Khudwani area last night, following information about presence of militants there, the officials said.
They said a gunbattle broke out between the militants and the government forces in the early hours.
Three force personnel were injured in the initial exchange of firing. Later one of them succumbed to injuries at a hospital, the officials said.
Local residents started pelting forces personnel with stones, leading to clashes, they said, adding that more than 30 civilians were injured.
A 25-year-old man succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Hospital sources said that Sharjeel Ahmad Sheikh had a bullet injury on his chest.
Later, a 13 year old Bilal Ahmad was also killed by government forces near the gunfight site.
The third civilian, Fazil Illahi was injured near the gunfight site and later succumbed to injuries on way to hiospital, witnesses said.
Local sources said that situation was very tense in the south Kashmir district where hundreds have joined the protesters at Khudwani.
