Ganderbal: People of Baroosa area in Ganderbal district observed a shutdown on Monday to remember a local youth, Umar Farooq, who was shot dead by BSF troops on the day of parliamentary by-elections last year.
All shops and business establishments remained shut while transport also stayed off the roads. A tipper driver, Umar was the only bread-earner for his family and lone brother of five sisters.
He was shot dead by BSF troopers who were escorting election commission staff when they were withdrawing from Ganderbal area. The BSF troops opened fire on a group of boys at Baroosa bypass. Umar was hit by a bullet in his abdomen.
Another civilian, Muzaffar Ahmad of Kulgam, who had an automobile repair shop at Baroosa, was also seriously injured in the firing and succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS some days later.
