Kupwara: A joint team of police, army’s 41 RR and 98 Bn CRPF claimed to have arrested a Pakistani militant of the Lashkar-e-Toiba, who had escaped from the encounter in Halmatpora forests on March 20, during a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Juggiyal forest area in Kupwara district on Friday. The CASO is still on to nab another militant who also escaped from the Halmatpora encounter.
Four army soldiers, a policeman, and five militants were killed in the operation in Halmatpora forests that lasted for three days.
Police sources said that the Pakistani militant arrested today had been badly injured in the Halmatpora encounter, and since then was roaming in the forests without any medical help. At the time of his arrest, the sources said, he was completely unarmed and in no position to escape.
In a statement issued by police, the arrested militant was identified as Zabiullah, son of Sannaullah Saqib, resident of Multan, Pakistan. The statement said he was “affiliated with outlawed terror organisation LeT. He had recently infiltrated and was part of the group who were eliminated at Halmatpora recently.”
The statement added, “Incriminating materials were recovered from his possession.”
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara, Shamsher Hussain, said that the CASO was still on in the area. “The CASO is still continuing and our police party is not yet back at office. When they will return, we will brief you further details,” the SSP said.
Police sources told Kashmir Reader that the arrested militant has been taken to an unknown place for questioning, and police may produce him on Saturday at a press conference.
Juggiyal village falls in Hyhama area of Kupwara district, some eight kilometres from the Halmatpora forests.
The police statement said that “Pursuing credible leads of presence of terrorists, Kupwara police along with 41 RR, 98 Bn CRPF launched a CASO in Juggiyal, Turshan Mohalla, Hyhama area of the district. While the searches were intensified, security forces zeroed on one house where one terrorist was hiding. The joint forces strategically trapped the terrorist and arrested him from the spot.”
