DC Ganderbal initiates ‘criminal negligence proceedings’ against Beacon authorities

Ganderbal: Lack of communication between district administration Ganderbal and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has led to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ganderbal initiating proceedings for ‘criminal negligence’ against the BRO.
BRO officials said on Friday that the Srinagar-Leh highway had been opened for vehicular traffic, but the Ganderbal administration said an order in this regard had not been issued by the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir.
The highway that connects Ladakh region to the rest of Jammu & Kashmir was officially re-opened for traffic on Friday by officers of army and BRO, a BRO official said.
He said the highway was thrown open for vehicular traffic during a function attended by Chinar Corps commander Lt General AK Bhatt, Chief Engineer of BRO’s Beacon wing, Brigadier Vishal Agarwal, and other BRO officers.
However, the DC Ganderbal said the Srinagar-Leh highway is not yet open for vehicular traffic.
DC Ganderbal Piyush Singla told Kashmir Reader, “Our office has not received anything in this regard, so the highway can’t be officially opened until an order to this effect is issued by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir.”
He also said that the district administration Ganderbal has decided to initiate “criminal negligence proceedings” against Beacon authorities.
A statement issued by the office of DC Ganderbal said it has decided to “initiate criminal negligence proceedings against Beacon authorities for unilaterally deciding to open Srinagar-Leh highway and putting the life and property of people in danger, besides creating confusion considering law and order situation prevailing in the areas.”
It is pertinent to mention that the district administration Ganderbal had been trying to get the highway opened at the earliest. Sonamarg resort has already been opened early in March to facilitate tourism.
Speaking on the issue, Singla said, “There is a procedure to everything. We are more eager to open the highway at the earliest, but the highway is closed and opened only by the order of Div Com Kashmir on the recommendation of our office. Beacon authorities didn’t bother to send their recommendation for approval by Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, and opened it unilaterally, creating confusion.”
