Sonamarg is known as the ‘Meadow of Gold’, the term ‘’Sona’’ literally means ‘’Gold’’ In ‘Hindi’ with snow-covered flower-laden fields, surrounded by majestic glaciers and serene lakes which cast subtle spells on visitors.
Translated as ‘the meadow of gold’, Sonamarg is a picturesque town located in Kashmir valley at an elevation of around 2800 km from sea level. Bound by natural beauty, breathtaking glaciers and serene lakes, the place is a popular tourist destination of Jammu and Kashmir. Various mountain lakes such as Gangabal, Vishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Kishansar are situated in and around Sonamarg.
The Government of Jammu and Kashmir paid little attention to this natural visiting spot. The former Jammu and Kashmir Government made a resolution that Sonamarg would be open for the whole season. If this happens, there will be rush of tourists every year and naturally it would boost the economy of Kashmir.
Sonamarg has a vast array of options for everyone. If you want to relax and lose yourself in the beauty of nature, there is no better place than Sonamarg. The peaceful ambiance and gorgeous landscapes will make you feel extremely relaxed. If you are an adventure seeker, then you would naturally love Sonamarg. It offers you opportunities for river rafting, skiing, trekking and camping.
A quaint hill station like Sonamarg has become a major hub for adrenaline junkies who like to indulge in blood-pumping physical activities while being surrounded by the beauty of nature.
The scenic place holds a rafting competition every year and boosts the competitive spirits of people. The Indus river of Sonamarg is famous for whitewater river rafting. The river is surrounded by hills on the either side. Under proper guidance, even a novice can enjoy the pleasure of rafting in Sonamarg.
Sonamarg is the perfect place for camping under the starry nights. You can set up your camp on the bank of a river and have a bonfire. Baltal Valley, in particular, is an ideal place in to enjoy camping. It is surrounded by thick forests and magnificent landscapes.
You can enjoy short as well long treks in Sonamarg. A trek to Vishansar, Krishnasar, Gangabal, Satsar and Gadsar lake can be undertaken by experienced trekkers. This trek is known as the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek.
