SRINAGAR: To ease out traffic congestion and accommodate the growing number of vehicles arriving daily in Srinagar city, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has identified 47 spots for paid parking. However Traffic authorities have approved the functioning of only 33 road parking spots.
As per the official data of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), only 12 street paid parking are functional in Srinagar.
Six paid parking spots are run directly under the control of SMC and six have been allotted to the local youth of Srinagar city.
And in allotment of two parking spots falling in the area of Mughal Darbar Kara Nagar and Residency Road Partap Park dispute is going on between SMC and shopkeepers.
The spots where the Street road parking system is presently working in the different parts of the Srinagar city include: Mughal Darbar Kara Nagar, Municipal Road outside SMC Central office, Residency Road near Hotel Lal Rukh, Residency road Partap Park, old secretariat, M.A Road women’s college, G.P.O Lane Bund Road, Sherwani Road outside Polo Ground, Sherwani Road opposite Linz restaurant, Residency Road along the walling of Government press, Joggers park Presentation Convent Road near police station Raj Bagh and S.B.I Lane Bund side.
Commissioner SMC Riyaz Ahmad Wani told Kashmir Reader that they have identified 47 spots for the purpose of street paid parking. 10 parking spots are functional and other paid parking spots which have been identified by the SMC falls in different places including hospitals, colleges and shrines of the Srinagar city.
“Within four months, the other parking spots will be started in the Srinagar,” he said.
The charges for parking are on the hour basis. It is ten rupees for one hour. A proper receipt is issued by the SMC to the car parkers,
Tahir Saleem, Senior Superintendent of police (City Traffic) of Srinagar said that SMC has identified 47 spots.
“We have only approved 33 spots for the street paid parking. The other 14 spots which already identified by the SMC haven’t been allotted yet”.
