Bandipora: A huge forest fire in compartment number 108 and 109 of Khuiama forest range in Bandipora district from Thursday is giving tough time to the officials of forest department in putting it off.
According to the forest officials the fire is spreading in several patches engulfing a vast and dense area. In the firefighting operation, around five officials (one of them critically) and as many locals have received burn injuries while dousing off the flames.
Citing less manpower of the forest department, the District administration has appealed locals to voluntarily help the forest department in putting off the fire which according to them is “spreading fast”.
Meanwhile a dense smoke from the fire has covered many residential areas of including Chiternaar, Ahetmulla, Nowpora and Plan. The people are complaining suffocation and breathlessness while the visibility has also been reduced.
DFO Hamid Malla said that it is difficult to update as of now whether the fire has been doused off as the smoke has covered the whole area.
He said that “flames are not visible but smoke is there, it will take an hour or more to gather an update when visibility improves”.
