BUDGAM: A complete shutdown and street clashes marked the first death anniversary of three youths killed in firing by government forces at the site of a gunfight in Chadoora area, here in Budgam district. Mild clashes were reported from Wathoora area of Chadoora on Wednesday afternoon after prayers were offered at the grave of one of the slain youths. All shops and businesses establishments were shut in Chadoora town and public transport was off the roads in major areas like Wathoora, Chadoora, Nagam and Rangreth.
Zahid Rashid Ganai, Amir Fayaz Waza, and Ishaq Ahmed Wani were the three youths killed, while 35 others were injured, when government forces opened fire to disperse protesters near the gunfight site at Durbug locality in Chadoora. A militant of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Touseef Ahmad Wagay of Kulgam, was killed in the fierce gunfight that lasted more than ten hours.
Top police officials had termed the civilian killings as unfortunate and said they would look into the circumstances that led to the deaths. “The killing of three youths is very unfortunate and the Deputy Inspector General of Police will look into the circumstances that led to the trio’s killing,” a top police officer had said last year.
