Kupwara residents protest against absence of doctors, patients suffer

Kupwara: A score of people staged a protest outside the sub District Hospital (SDH) Kupwara on Wednesday morning against the non-availability of doctors in the hospital.
The people alleged that a pregnant lady was shifted to the hospital when she developinga labour pain on Tuesday evening,“but there were no doctors available in the hospitalto look after her”.
They said only few para medical staff members were present but they were too helpless because of non-availability of a doctor. Later they gave an injection to the patient and she felt unconscious till the morning, they said.
On Wednesday morning when people and shopkeepers around the hospital heard about the incident they staged a protest against the doctors and hospital management. They appealed higher authorities of health department to take action against the doctors who were not present in the hospital during the night.
Protesting people said that the doctors are spending most of their time at their clinics and are not paying attention towards the patients who are visiting the hospital from far flung areas.
President civil society KupwaraShowqat Ahmad Masoodi said that the doctors posted in the hospital are giving preference to their private clinics and are forcing people to visit other hospitals or to their private clinics.
Sources said that after the protest, two doctors reached the hospital.
