Baramulla: Forest department on Tuesday seized a tipper loaded with illegal timber in Rafiabad area of Baramulla.
Local sources said that seized timber was chopped in Kutran forest range by timber smugglers in league with some forest officials and was being smuggled to Sopore.
Days after when this newspaper was published a news story that timber smuggling unabated in north Kashmir’s Baramulla forests, and then officials of forest department was completely denied the report, the officials of forest department seized a (Tipper) loaded with fresh illegal timber in Rafiabad area of the district on Tuesday.
An official said that acting on specific information, a team of officials led by forest range officer Rafiabad Abdul Qayoom seized a Tipper bearing registration number JK02G/5722 loaded with fresh Deodar timber at Lasar crossing.
The official added that no one has been arrested yet.
Abdul Qayoom told Kashmir Reader that a case has been registered and further investigation is going on.
Meanwhile, sources said that a forest official was injured in an attack by timber smugglers in Bumhama forests falling under Kamraj Forest Division range Kupwara on Tuesday morning.
The smugglers attacked the forest official with a sharp-edged weapon and managed to escape from the spot.
The injured official has been identified as Ghulam Rasool Mir.
