Sopore: In a pre-dawn cordon and search operation (CASO) at Brath village on Sopore outskirts, government detained two local youths on Tuesday. The detained duo was identified as Khurshid Ahmed Mir, son of Abdul Rashid Mir, and Mehraj Ahmed, both residents of Brath Kalan, Sopore.
Police officials in Sopore said that after receiving inputs about presence of militants in the area, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by army’s 22 RR, police SOG, and paramilitary CRPF early Tuesday morning. However, no contact was established with militants during the search operation.
During the CASO, reports of a few gunshots led to panic among the villagers, but it was not known who had fired the shots as the entire village was cordoned off, locals of the area said.
As soon as the news of two youths being detained spread in the area, people came out from their houses and started protesting. It led to clashes between youths and government forces in which the forces lobbed tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters.
Reports suggested that four youths were injured in the clashes and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A senior police official in Sopore said it was a normal routine checking. He refuted reports of injuries to any person.
