Baramulla: Police seized two trucks carrying government subsidised sugar (PDS supply) on Sunday and arrested their drivers for selling it in black market in Singhpora area of Pattan in Baramulla district. A third person has also been arrested in the connection.
Police sources said that they received information that some people were unloading and selling government subsidised sugar to a private person in Singhpora area, after which they reached the spot and seized two trucks and arrested two persons.
The other involved persons believed to be from Consumer Affairs department managed to escape before police reached the spot, they said.
The two arrested drivers were identified as Syed Mumtaz Ahmad Shah of Vilgam Kupwara and Bashir Ahmad Bajard of Handwara. Another person, Mushtaq Ahmad Khan of Singpora Pattan has also been arrested.
Police said the two trucks were hired by SRTC for Consumer affairs department to ferry ration supplies.
Station house officer (SHO) Pattan Mohammad Saleem confirmed the arrests and seizure of two trucks.
As the news spread in the area, a number of people reached the spot and appealed police to take serious action against the culprits.
