PULWAMA: Public Health Centre (PHC) at Hawal village in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district is functioning in a rented building, despite being operational since 1984. The center is staff deficient and poor on basic infrastructure.
Local residents say that the center is functioning without a dentist, lab assistant and x-ray technician.
Villagers told Kashmir Reader that they were facing huge problems due to the unavailability of doctors and technical facilities. “There is no dentist for several months. The doctor was attached to some other hospital without any alternative. We are facing huge problems, either we have to go to the hospitals of other districts or to private clinics due to the lack of dental doctor here,” Shahid-ul-Islam, a local resident said.
A group of locals told Kashmir Reader that it is a joke to have only two doctors in a PHC where dozens of villages are dependent for health care facilities. They said that years have passed but authorities didn’t find land for raising hospital’s own building.
Villagers added that despite being one of the oldest health centers, PHC Hawal was neglected by government as according to them they have no political clout.
Mudasir Ahmad, another resident said that the rented building has no x-ray facility.
“There is no government or private health centre in our area, we are forced to go to district hospital Pulwama or Srinagar based hospital for treatment and medical advice,” he said.
Block medical officer Rajpora, Dr Javid Ahmad said that he has brought the issue of laboratory assistant and dental doctor into the notice of chief medical officer Pulwama. “It is true that Hawal PHC lacks doctors and facilities. I hope the dental doctor and laboratory technician will soon be deployed at the hospital,” he said.
. When both of these posts were transferred, I was not here otherwise I would not have allowed them to attach the doctors without posting alternatives here,” he said.
Chief medical officer Pulwama, Dr Jaffar Akhoon told Kashmir Reader that would write to the higher authorities regarding the deployment of doctors and basic amenities to the hospital.
He said the lab technician and dental doctor will be available soon in the hospital.
