SHOPIAN: Snow clearance is going on at full swing on the Mughal Road, with officials hoping the road to be ready for traffic by April.
Mughal Road serves as an alternative highway between Jammu and Srinagar, connecting south Kashmir district Shopian with Poonch in Jammu by a 84 kilometer road through Pir Panjal mountains.
Officials added that a proposed tunnel from Zaznar to Chattapani could keep this road open for all seasons.
The road was closed for traffic snowfall in December. Every year the road remains closed for about four months due to the heavy snowfall and apprehension of shooting stones and avalanches.
Muhammad Afzal Bhat, Executive Engineer, Mechanical Engineering Department (MED), Anantnag division told Kashmir Reader that snow clearance was going on which would take almost a week to finish.
“If the weather remains pleasant it will take us less than a week to complete our job and after that the road will be open for vehicular movement,” he said.
Bhat said the road was currently pliable but they were widening the snow clearance.
“We used to clear 41 kilometers of road from Shopian to Pir Ki Gali and from there the snow clearance comes under mechanical division Ponch,” he said while adding that it may take more time for the Ponch mechanical division than us.
