SHOPIAN: District Development Commissioner (DDC) Shopian, Mohammad Aijaz, on Thursday flagged-off one-day awareness-cum-exposure tour for sericulture farmers of the district.
The tour was organised under the GoI- sponsored Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) scheme during which the farmers will visit the Central Sericulture Research Training Institution Pampore, Silk Reeling Unit Khanmooh and KVK-Malangpora.
Speaking on the occasion, the DDC said that the aim of the programme was to acquaint farmers with the latest technology being used by the sericulture department regarding silkworm rearing and maintenance of mulberry trees.
He impressed upon the farmers to “make optimum use of this opportunity so as to make Shopian district self-reliant in silkworm production”. Officials of the department and other concerned were also present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, the DDC also flagged-off a group of 100 farmers for exposure tour to SKUAST-K Shalimar.
The tour was organised under Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) scheme.
The DDC was accompanied by Chief Horticulture Officer, district Horticulture officers, and extension horticulture officers besides prominent persons from civil society.
On the occasion, the DDC stressed upon the farmers to fully acquaint themselves with the modern technologies adopted by university and progressive fruit growers, especially in the high-density plantation.
He said, “Horticulture activities play an important role for the upliftment of farming community and is also the backbone of the rural economy.”
He advised them to take full benefits of the government-sponsored schemes and asked the Chief Horticulture Officer to ensure more field visits for progressive farmers.
