SHOPIAN: Government forces on Thursday afternoon launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Turkwangam village of Shopian district, after “intelligence inputs about the presence of militants”. Local sources in the village told Kashmir Reader that a joint team of forces conducted door-to-door searches in several houses in Lone Mohalla locality of the village.
Eyewitnesses told Kashmir Reader that when forces were conducting searches, local youths hit the streets and hurled stones on the forces personnel, who hit back with tear smoke canisters, pellets and stun grenades.
Witnesses said that two boys, one from Turkwangam and the other from Trenz area, sustained pellet injuries, the boy from Turkwangam in his eyes. Both the injured youths were referred to SMHS Srinagar for treatment, they said.
The Senior Superintendent of Police Shopian, AS Dinkar, told Kashmir Reader that searches were conducted in Turkwangam village but they were called off after no contact with militants was established. “Stone-pelters were contained by police peacefully,” Dinkar said.
