Kupwara: Four unidentified militants were killed in a gunfight with government forces in forest area near Halmatpora village in Kupwara district on Tuesday. Official sources in the army said that a joint team of army and other government forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in the Halmatpora Hyhama forests, about 8 kilometres from the district headquarters, on Tuesday afternoon at about 3:30. Army officials said that specific information had been received of the presence of a group of militants in the forests.
As the CASO was launched, a group of militants fired upon the army and other government forces and the fire was retaliated, army officials said. In the gunfight, four militants were killed. The operation is still continuing to search if any other militants remain in the area.
Sources said that the army’s 41 RR, paramilitary CRPF, and police special operations group (SOG) in Kupwara were part of the operation.
Locals in Halmatpora said that hundreds of army men cordoned the forest area near their village. They said that heavy firing was heard for hours and villagers were ordered to stay inside their houses.
Srinagar-based PRO of the Indian Army, Colonel Rajash Kalia, confirmed that four militants were killed and the operation was continuing in the area.
