Sonamarg: The 90-km-long Srinagar-Sonamarg road on the strategic highway to Ladakh was thrown open for Light motor vehicles on Tuesday.
Officials said after remaining covered under snow and slides for over five months, the road was thrown open thereby connecting the resort for regular tourist traffic ahead.
Sub Divisional Magistrate, Kangan, Mehraj-ud-din Shah while confirming the report told Kashmir Reader , the road opened today for light motor vehicles after prior permission from BRO authorities who are taking care of that all important highway.
SDM added that the traffic on the mentioned stretch will ply under strict observation to avoid any inconvenience.
“The traffic movement on the Gagangeer-Sonamrag stretch is allowed from 11AM to 3PM only till further orders and no vehicle is allowed to move Sonamarag onwards” Mehraj added.
Sonamarg remains cut off due to heavy snow on a 12 km stretch of the road from Gagangeer during winter months every year.
