Chennai: Climate change caused by global warming, especially from carbon dioxide emissions, has had a phenomenal impact on humans, a former NEERI official said here Monday.
“Global warming is leading to climate change, which has led to a phenomenal impact on humans. The threat of global warming is the greatest from emission of carbon dioxide”, Sukumar Devotta, former director of National Environmental Engineering and Research Institute (NEERI) said.
Fossil fuel-based thermal power plants produce about one third of Carbon dioxide world wide, he added.
Devotta said that “with India and China heavily relying on coal for thermal power generation, carbon dioxide emission could increase in future”.
Stating that afforestation may be the “cheapest option” for carbon sequestration, he said there are attempts worldwide to capture carbon dioxide produced from thermal and industrial plants.
Devotta was delivering the T S Narayanaswami annual Memorial Lecture on “Chemical Engineering Applications for Better Environment” here.
The lecture was instituted by city-based cement manufacturer India Cements Ltd in memory of its founder T S Narayanaswami.
