SHOPIAN: Shopian district’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) had a narrow escape after their cavalcade was attacked by militants near Hajipora village on Saturday.
“We were going to attend a function organised by 33 RR of army at Behibagh army base, in the neighboring district Kulgam. A group of militants attacked my vehicle. The assistant superintendent was accompanying me in the vehicle. They attacked our vehicle from a hillock surrounded by dense orchards. There was a brief exchange of fire but the militants fled from the spot soon after the exchange of fire,” SSP Shopian AS Dinkar said.
The incident took place near Hajipora village at around 11 in the morning. Locals said that the gun fire created panic in the area as majority of people were working in their orchards.
Officials in the police said that all four vehicles in the cavalcade were bullet proof. They said that several bullets hit the vehicle of the SSP but fortunately there was no damage.
Soon after the attack, a joint team of special operation group of police, central reserve police force (CRPF) and the army cordoned off the area. “There were people working in orchards so we first shifted them to safe places, and then searches were conducted in the area by a joint team of security forces,” Dinkar said.
He added that about 10 militants of Hizb and Lashkar outfits were believed to be present in the area.
