SRINAGAR: A non-local Muslim cleric has been arrested by police for allegedly raping a minor girl belonging to nomadic community in Jammu’s Nagrota.
The accused identified as Shahnawaz is a resident of West Bengal, police said.
The victim’s family filed a First Information Report at the Nagrota police station on March 12 after the girl had complained of pain in her private parts.
The seven-year-old girl used to study in a local Madrassa at Bajalta. Superintendent of Police (SP) Nagrota, Shivdeep Singh told Kashmir Reader that police swung in to action and began to look for the accused soon after the complaint was filed.
“It took us around ten hours to arrest Shahnawaz as he was on run,” Singh said adding that Shahnawaz had hidden himself somewhere in Nagrota.
The SP said they have not received the report of medical examination so far.
“It is up to the doctors when they will come up with the reports,” Singh said. “The accused has been booked under section 376 of CRPC.”
Talib Husain, an activist, who has been fighting for the justice for 8-year-old Aasifa, raped and murdered in Kathua, condemned the incident saying that government should punish the culprit and society should boycott such people so that no one thinks to commit such a heinous crime.
Husain said that he was saddened to hear that a cleric had committed such a crime. “Such kind people malign the image of Islam,” he added.
“On one hand rightwing wing Hindu organizations are tormenting, threatening and committing kind of atrocities on Muslims in Jammu, and on the other hand such incidents take place I wonder where the Muslims in Jammu shall go,” Husain lamented.
