Chanapora, Natipora residents complain of contaminated water

srinagar: Residents of Chanapora, Bagh-I-Mehtab and Natipora are up in arms against the Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) for supplying them contaminated water.
“The water is so muddy if u will come to my house you will see my reservoir is full of dirt and mud. Despite this, they enhance the fee every time and charge us Rs 1810 per year. After every two months, we have to clean the water reservoirs”. Said Muhammad Iqbal , a resident of Natipora.
Residents of Natipora claims that despite registering verbal complaints many times with the concerned PHE authorities, no action has been taken yet. “Whenever we raise our problems with the concerned officials, they say we provide the best quality of water,” residents added.
Abdul Majeed Bhat of Pamposh colony Chanapora has an almost similar tale to tell, “We receive only 8 hours water supply for a day and irony is that too is contaminated. This is adversely affecting our health,” he said.
“Whenever we talk to the concerned officials they said it’s your fault as you people have multiple connections”. Bhat added.
Dr Nissar Ahmad Mir, a physician says contaminated water can lead to multiple diseases like vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach ache, Skin rashes.
“Muddy water consumed for a long time can also result in serious diseases like Cancer, reproductive problems, developmental problems I request people to always take filtered or boiled water for the sake of their good health,” he said. Mohammad Maqbool Mir a sample collector in Tangnar lab told Kashmir Reader that “People always complaint, but when we collect samples water is clean”. Neither there are such impurities nor have we received even a single complaint regarding contaminated water.’While talking to Kashmir Reader, Mohammad Ashraf Assistant Engineer Doodh Ganga water plant said that haven’t received any complaint, “we also wanted to end this but due to pipe breakage and illegally installed water pumps creates havoc for the consumers. People have already more than one connection and after taking the double connections they are blaming the departments, both people, as well as the department, is responsible for this menace. We have started survey whoever we found guilty have to face the law”.
Basharat Ahmad Kawoosa executive engineer from Tangnar water plant said: “we are not going to compromise on quality. We also have testing labs, filtration plants and checking points but we haven’t received any complaint yet”
Aijaz Ahamad Qureshi Executive Engineer water works Srinagar) told Kashmir Reader that people use water motors that’s why they face difficulties.”Drain water can be an issue. Rest we haven’t received any complaint regarding any water issue.”
