Srinagar: The fishermen of Dal Lake on Wednesday held a protest demonstration against the fisheries department for not allowing them to use gill net in fishing.
Saying that they earn their livelihood with fishing in Dal Lake, scores of protesters assembled here in press enclave and raised slogans against the fisheries department.
Muhammad Ibrahim, one of the protestors said, “We are nearly 800 families which are directly depending on this profession. We are fishing in Dal Lake by using gill net. But now, unfortunately, fisheries department do not give us permission to use the gill net. In other states, fisher men also use the gill net. Why they banned it in Kashmir,” Ibrahim questioned.
Director of fisheries department, R. N Pandita told Kashmir Reader that government has already banned the use of gill net. But some people are using the gill net in Dal Lake. It is an offence under the Fisheries acts.
“They can also use the other nets permitted by the fisheries department,” he said.
