Srinagar: Van Drivers Association of Srinagar held a peaceful protest against the harassment of the traffic police department in press colony here on Tuesday.
There are around three thousand cabs running in Srinagar, which pick and drop school kids. Protesters said that police has seized their many vans and they fear of losing their job.
President, Srinagar Van Drivers Association,Nazir Ahmad Bhat, told Kashmir Reader that “It is our only source of income and we are solely dependent upon this profession. If we are not allowed to run, our families will come on streets because we are very poor and hardly meet our needs.”
“In 2014, we met Masood UzZamaan who was then SSP traffic, who accepted all our demands. If those demands would have been illegal then how could he accepted them,” Nazir Ahmad added.
“We are all educated and are not doing any government jobs. We request the concerned department to look into the matter on humanitarian grounds,” the drivers said.
