Shopian: A complete shutdown for the eighth straight day was observed in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday. Except for a couple of hours on Saturday, all shops and markets have stayed shut in protest against the killing of four civilians and two local militants by the army in Pahnoo village on March 4.
Schools in the district remain closed and traffic is still off the roads. Residents of Pinjora, Pahnoo and adjoining villages said that they are demanding the removal of the army camp at Pahnoo. They said the shutdown will continue till the army camp is removed.
Some stone-pelting was reported from Meminder village, but there were no reports of any injuries.
On Sunday, some shopkeepers had tried to open their shops but they were asked to shut them down.
People in Shopian had observed a similar shutdown, for about 15 days, since January 27 when three youths were killed in army firing at Ganowpora village.
