Bandipora: The students at the Government Middle School Sonarwani–5 km from Bandipora—had to wade through heavy construction material dumped in their school ground on the first day of school.
The construction material is being dumped for the widening of River Madhumati at the spot for Kishanganga Hydel Power Project.
The excitement of the schoolchildren on the first day fizzled out soon after finding the ground cramped with construction material.
“The children couldn’t assemble for morning prayer and couldn’t play games for which the ground is meant,” a disappointed parent told Kashmir Reader.
The children were seen making their way to the classes stepping through wads of iron rods and other construction material.
The dumped material trashed the claims of education department about the welcome week and introduction of curricular activities it boasts of.
The callous approach of the education department can be gauged from the fact that it has left the school compound unfenced leaving it open for misuse.
The students said the construction material is being picked up from the school ground by heavy machinery.
Deputy Commissioner Bandipora told Kashmir Reader that the construction material would be cleared from the school ground within 10-15 days, “as the work will last for that long only”, “The fencing of the school will also be done soon,” he said.
