INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
SRINAGAR: To celebrate women’s achievements in the field of agriculture, Department of Agriculture observed International Women’s Day at Agriculture Complex, Lalmandi here on Thursday. Director Agriculture, Syed Altaf Aijaz Andrabi welcomed all the women participants and appreciated their work.
He said that traditionally agriculture had been viewed as a male dominated industry, but now things have changed and “women make-up the backbone of agriculture economy”, read an official handout.
He said, “In terms of women’s contribution to agriculture economic output, the role of women is increasing with every passing day and it is commendable.”
He said women were the key players in the field of agriculture, and would be powerful change agents for providing solutions to the biggest challenges (like impact of climate change) faced by present agriculture scenario. Director agriculture said that according to recent report by National Mission for Empowerment of Women, 60% of all the agriculture operations were handled exclusively by women. “Women in most cases have a bigger role in agriculture than men, at least in small and marginal farmlands,” he said.
Andrabi said it should be our commitment to provide them a just and secure working environment so that they could play their role in strengthening the agriculture sector.
He said, “Recognizing the role of women in agriculture is the only way to achieve economic sustainability.” Various women participants expressed their gratitude to the department for organising the event. They said that the women officers and officials of the department were working with commitment and dedication for the development and upliftment of the farming community, the handout added.
