SHOPIAN: Clashes and stone-pelting incidents were reported on Thursday from Meminder, Sofanaman, Gagren, and Kannipora areas of Shopian district amid a complete shutdown observed for the fourth consecutive day against the killing of civilians and local militants by the army on Sunday evening. Freedom songs and slogans were still being played from mosques loudspeakers at the native villages of the slain civilians and militants, locals of these six different villages told Kashmir Reader.
In Meminder area, youths clashed with government forces in the afternoon and despite use of tear smoke shells and stun grenades to disperse the protesters, the clashes lasted till the evening. There were no reports of any injuries in these clashes. Protesters also clashed with forces at Sofanaman and Gagren areas while stone-pelting incidents were reported from Kannipora area on the outskirts of the main town.
Internet services remained suspended across Shopian district since they were suspended on Sunday evening.
All shops and business establishments remained closed on Thursday in the district and the only traffic on the roads was of vehicles ferrying people to the homes of the slain civilians and militants.
An official at Shopian sub-district hospital told Kashmir Reader that besides the four persons with pellet injuries who were brought to the hospital on Wednesday, two more youths were brought late on Wednesday night, one of them with pellets in his chest. He said people were scared to come to hospital as they did not want police to see their names among those injured during clashes.
