SHOPIAN: Water supply scheme in Kashew village of Shopian is incomplete even eight years ago its eight foundation stone was laid.
Residents said that the water scheme was sanctioned after their repeated requests to the government regarding the water crisis in the village. They said that before this scheme was envisioned, three wells were dug by the government but all three dried due to unknown reasons.
A local resident, Ali Muhammad Bhat said that he has given one Kanal of land for the construction of water supply scheme after officials assured him that one of his family members will be provided a government job.
“Till date neither the scheme was completed nor was the job provided to any of our family members. I am tired of pleading before government officials,” he said while adding that if the government would not complete the scheme within months and give him a government job, he will take back his land.
“I cut my apple trees and provided them with the land but in return, they (government) humiliated me,” Bhat told Kashmir Reader.
Suhail Ahmad, a villager said that more than a crore of rupees was sanctioned by the government for the scheme but the water tank and its quarters are decaying without any use.
Water scarcity has become a norm of the day. “PHE department supplying us contaminated water which has become a major source of diseases for us,” Muhammad Yousuf Mir another resident said while demanding speedy completion of water supply scheme.
Villagers also said that majority of work on the scheme has been done but for the want of pipelines and a generator, the scheme has turned defunct.
Executive engineer Public Health Engineering Shopian, Nisar Ahmad told Kashmir Reader that due to the depletion of old well they are going to dug a new one. “Rs 70 lakhs were spend on old scheme and now since the old well has dried up we will dig a new one with a cost of 2.2 crore after that we will provide the supply to village,” he said.
He added that they have provided alternate water supply to the village till the completion of well water supply scheme.
