Ganderbal: The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has started snow clearance operation to resume traffic on Srinagar-Sonamarg Road on Wednesday.
The BRO is maintaining the highway that connects Kashmir Valley with Ladakh region and passes through treacherous Zoji La pass. The BRO has pressed its men and machinery into service from Gagangir area to restore the road-link.
BRO officials told Kashmir Reader that the snow clearance operation “Team 122 RCC” led by Captain Kaushal Sharma under the supervision of Col. Amit Chander started with the snow clearance from Gagangir Park towards Sonamarg.
Captain Kaushal Sharma told Kashmir Reader that if weather permits, and there is no further rain and snowfall, the road is expected to be thrown open for vehicular traffic by first week of March
The road remains closed for winter months due to heavy accumulation of snow, slides and avalanches.
The road was closed for vehicular movement in January this year due to bad weather conditions, snowfall and threat of landslides and no vehicle is being allowed to move ahead of Gagangeer down to Sonamarag.
The primary aim of the snow clearance is to reinstate the communication between Srinagar to Leh as soon as possible so that supply of goods and services resumes to the Kargil sector and Leh via Roads.
