Anantnag: Suspected militants allegedly decamped with the mobile phones of three policemen guarding a shrine in Khiram area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district late Tuesday evening.
Police sources said that the guards were unarmed and were threatened at gunpoint by the militants, “who had come to snatch weapons from the policemen.”
The incident took place at about 9:00 PM Thursday evening.
SHO Srigufwara, in whose jurisdiction the Khiram area falls, acknowledged the incident while talking to Kashmir Reader. “Yes, their mobile phones were taken away by armed men late last evening,” SHO Ateequllah said. “They had actually come to snatch weapons but found none as the policemen there were unarmed,” he added.
He said that no one was hurt in the incident.
A senior police official from the area, however, raised doubts about the incident. He said that the police were investigating the matter to see what actually happened there.
“Everyone in the area knows the guards do not carry weapons,” the official said, on condition of anonymity. “Besides, what use do the militants have for their mobile phones? They cannot use their own phones freely, leave alone phones snatched from policemen,” he said.
