Srinagar: A “caravan” of police and paramilitary vehicles arrived in Chaan-Mohalla and Mughal-Mohalla of Chhatabal on Monday morning, and house-to-house searches began during which police “whisked away” a local youth, residents of the area said.
“A joint team of police and CRPF came at around 8 in the morning,” a local resident said, ishing not to be named. He said the search operation was conducted like a crackdown. “People were pulled out of their mattresses,” he said.
A youth was “arrested” during the searches that continued for almost an hour, locals said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar, Imtiaz Ismail The searches were conducted hours after militants killed a policeman guarding the house of Hurriyat leader Fazal Haq Qureshi in Bilal Colony Soura. The militants also decamped with the service rifle of the slain policeman.
Residents of Soura told Kashmir Reader that government forces conducted search operations in Soura following the killing of the policeman. “Forces searched all the houses of Bilal Colony post the attack in the late evening,” a local resident said.
Late-evening search operations were also conducted in Budgam’s Aharbal-Khaag and Teilsar-Charar-i-Sharief areas after a group of suspected militants killed a policeman guarding the shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (RA) popularly known as Charar-i-Sharief. Residents of these areas said that the searches ended peacefully.
