Chandigarh: An avalanche warning was issued today for some districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand by the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) here.
The warning was issued in a SASE advisory that followed a fresh round of snowfall in areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
According to the advisory, medium danger warning exists for avalanche-prone areas of Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts of J&K above 2,600 metres altitude and Kargil district above 3,000 m altitude while low danger avalanche warning exists for prone areas of Leh district of the state above 3,000 metres altitude.
A medium danger avalanche warning for the same period was also issued for prone areas of Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh above 2,600 m altitude and low danger warning for prone areas of Kinnaur district of the state above 2,600 m altitude, the advisory said.
For Uttarakhand, medium danger avalanche warning for the same period was issued for prone areas of Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Tehri Garhwal districts above 2,800 metres altitude.
Low danger avalanche warning exists for avalanche prone areas of Uttarkashi and Pithorgarh districts in the state above 2,800 metres altitude, the advisory said.
“People are advised not to venture in avalanche-prone slopes or areas for the next 24 hours,” it said. The warning valid for the next 24 hours beginning 5 pm today.
The advisory mentioned fresh snowfall had occurred at many places in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh since yesterday. Banihal Top in Jammu and Kashmir had received 27 cm of snow while Gulmarg got 25 cm and Drass 7 cm. In Himachal Pradesh, Dhundi received heavy snowfall of 67 cm of snow while Patseo got 16 cm of snowfall.
