Holds two-hour long dharna in old city
Srinagar: Under the banner of Shahr-e-Khass Coordination Committee, a two hour dharna was observed by traders in Gojwara area of old city against the administration for failing to rehabilitate the victims of a fire incident that broke out in the two-storey Aquaf building in December last year. Dozens of shops were gutted in the massive fire.
The traffic movement from Hawal and other areas was halted as scores of traders observed a complete shutdown from Gojwara Chowk to Islamia College.
“We don’t understand why government always remains at the back when it comes to the development of old city,” said Bashir Kenu, President Shehr-e-Khas Coordination Committee. These traders had these shops as the only source for their livelihood as “administration had made huge promises to compensate the loss” but nothing has been done so far, he alleged.
“We have been already suffering because of the restrictions every now and then in the old city, but now we are on the verge of starvation as our source has been vanished”, said a local trader.
The traders threatened to intensify the protests against the government, if their demands were not fulfilled.
