Srinagar: Inspector General (IG), Jammu Kahsmir Armed Police Afhad-ul-Mujtaba, will take over the charge of the IG Crime Branch on March 1 replacing Additional Director General Police (ADGP) Crime, Alok Puri.
Puri is retiring from service by the end of this month.
Mujtaba is taking over at a crucial time, when the Crime Brach is investigation the rape and murder of an Gujjar girl in Kathua.
Mujtaba is expected to bring his expertise in solving criminal cases, especially as SSP Srinagar to the rape and murder case, which however, has already been given a communal twist, with the Hindu Ekta Manch (HEM) members alleging biased investigations, and holding rallies for release of accused rapist.
The protest by the Manch in support of accused, while carrying a the Indian national flag has shocked many and even elicited an angry response from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
The Manch is seeking the transfer of case to CBI.
