PIL says mining affecting lives and environment, endangering lives
Srinagar: The J&K High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to produce a list of mining sites operational in J&K.
Hearing a public interest litigation on the adverse impact of mining activities across the state, the division bench of Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar and Justice M K Hanjura directed authorities to produce the list by next hearing.
The counsel representing the petitioners told the court that the authorities especially Commissioner Secretary Industries & Commerce and Director Geology & Mining have ignored the objective of supervision and inspection of the mining activities in the J&K.
He said that illegal mining has adversely affected the landscape of the state and caused heavy loss of lives, property and adversely affected the environment including air, water and soil.
The court directed that a senior officer of the Geology department of the rank of Joint Director provide the list of mining sites operating in the state.
The court also directed that officials shall hold a meeting with the petitioner-counsel and the counsel representing central government was also directed to ensure a meeting with amicus curie for finalizing the list.
The court observed that due to mining precious lives are lost and thus safety gadgets and medical facility should be in place on mining sites.
