Palhalan: Palhalan area in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district woke up early Friday morning to a gunfight between militants and a joint team of army and police. According to sources, two militants were reportedly trapped, one of them said to be a local from Tangmarg area.
Both of them managed to escape.
“While the cordon was being established and civilians being evacuated from the area, militants fired indiscriminately and managed to escape taking advantage of darkness,” police said.
Officials said that information about presence of militants in Tantaraypora Palhalan was received and, accordingly, a joint operation was launched in the area.
As soon as the news of the operation spread in the village, scores of youths took to the streets and clashed with forces. A 24-year-old was injured after government forces reportedly fired pellets at a group of youths near the encounter site.
Reports said the youth, identified as Ghulam Hassan, was shifted to a Srinagar hospital for specialised treatment. There was no official confirmation of the injury.
Internet services in some areas of Baramulla district were suspended. Railway authorities suspended train services on the Srinagar to Baramulla route during the entire day.
